Father’s Day: taking care of His kids!

Happy Fathers Day, Abba, Father!

On the Weekend of Father’s Day, and more specifically, Friday and Sunday (June 17 & 19, 2016), a wonderful out-pouring of love, care and much-needed medical attention was provided to Gods kids. Dental, medical, eye/optometry, and pastoral care (provided by two chaplains and a recent graduate of Andrews University Theological seminary (My own Son, Pastor David Ettari)), as well as massage therapy and lifestyle education was provided for two full days – all free to the communities surrounding and including Mansfield, Texas.  This was a pilot program, launched by the Texas Conference of  Seventh-Day Adventists. I happened to be visiting my son, who is presently in school and attending the Mansfield SDA Church, where this “field hospital” was set up requiring every inch of space.

Father's DAY Gift to God!

As I’m a nurse, I was amazed  at the ‘makeshift’ dental hospital, the presence of sophisticated portable eye exam macFather's DAY Gift to God!hines, X-ray and dental equipment, while patients lay in lounge chairs and dentists sat on chairs requiring some difficult maneuvering to reach their patients. Many of the dentists came from Texas A & M University, Baylor College of Dentistry.   I was amazed by the team spirit and the amount of volunteers present as well as the outpouring of hard work by a large group of strangers/medical professionals and volunteers of equal importance (most who call themselves Christians and some reporting no particular faith). They all came because of flyers on cars, announcements in churches, face-book advertisements, local Christian television (Good News TV), local schools and word of mouth – to facilitate a comprehensive goal that could be called, “Project Rescue Gods’ Hurting Kids.” It’s my understanding that all traveled at their own expense and in some cases, quite a distance. IMG_3181

The atmosphere shouted that “We are the family of God!” and His Spirit was evident to all. It was a glimpse of heavens’ mustard seed.

The next table, lined with equipment, was for those seeking any form of care, ‘the registration table’. Once registered, all were pro-
The Registration Tablevided health screenings. Table after table after table of nurses were busy educating and screening for hypertension, Diabetes and more. Next, the halls were lined with chairs for those waiting for ex ray, dental care, cleaning, medical doctor consults, the eye doctor, and in the annex across the way, massage, life style education and counseling ( by a medical doctor) and pastoral prayer and care were set up.

One medical doctor flew from California, one from Tennessee, one of the many dentists told me he drove four hours. Others flew from distant parts of Texas.

They all came, in any case, sacrificing a relaxing Father’s Day! They came to donate their time and skills in the care of Gods’ kids, many of which were in dire need with no medical insurance. They came, bringing their talents and God-given skills to bless their Heavenly Father and care for HIS children.

I met a Nunurse anesthetistrse-Anesthetist among the rows nurses (RN’s or BSN’s). They were checking blood pressures and blood sugars for hours. One nurse shared that a young man had been found to have high blood pressure. Heart disease is a silent killer and when this young and unaware man learned of his condition, the nurse provided education on changes to his diet, including the importance of minimizing salt as well as the importance of self monitoring and where possible, reporting this to a primary care physician.

But many of the over 500 patients that received medical attention, including teeth cleaning, x-rays, extractions, eye exams leading to new eye glasses,  consults with medical doctors, and important screening for diabetes, Police Chief, Officer and Pastorheart disease and more, do not have medical insurance or the co-pay is cost prohibitive. Also present was the Mansfield Chief of Police and one of his officers pictured here with Pastor Sean Harris of the Mansfield Seventh Day Adventist Church. Dressed in uniform, he provided a sense of additional order to the safe environment of God’ house. His wife is also notable in that she was beaming for joy and expressing gratitude at finding a way to provide service to the Lord on Father’s Day . They are christians from another denomination, but  clearly, they are our brethren.  She explained that she’s a realtor, but dusted off her dental assistant license and was there to pitch in.

As I stood by an exit, I noticed a beautiful family; a young husband and wife with a small child in her daddy’s arms.family
I asked if they had any medical care. They smiled and said, “No. We didn’t need anything.” I asked if they were Seventh Day Adventists. They smiled and said, “We are members of the ‘Mansfield Mosque’. We saw the flyers and were curious.” It was my privilege to welcome them to the Seventh Day Adventist church and assure them, that they are more than welcome any time, and invited them to come again.
Just before I left, I met a well dressed man who had dental work and explained that he was living in a near-by shelter and was grateful to be out of pain. Asked if he knew what church this was, he said, ” It’s the Seventh Day Adventist Church”…. And then he said, ” I had no idea they did things like this.”

To Be or Not To Be

imagesRecently, a dear friend said to me, “Sally! God created you to be a human being, not a human doing. You must slow down and you must focus on ‘being’ … not so much ‘doing’.  I found this so interesting. Self thought: ‘Hmmmmm, but I have so much to do?!?!’

“I AM A Worm…” Psalm 22

Many, many years ago, when I was just eighteen years old, I started to read and study the bible;  It was at the very beginning of my walk with a  God I barely knew or even believed in. It was about that time,  I Sally Ettari a/k/a Sally Atari, Inspirational Music, Gospel, Christian, Concerts, Public Speaker, Bookings, Christian, OA, Guitarmet  a young man, only one year older than me. He loved the bible too and at his young age of 19, he knew so much. He agreed to study with me and it wasn’t long before we reached Psalm 22, a ‘song’ written by King David, a musician and psalmist. The young man aspired to teach seminars on the subject of Creationism. Just as my hearts desire was to serve God through music, he, being a scientist, had a strong desire to serve God and present the study of Creationism, which strives to make a case, based on scientific evidence, that God is indeed the creator of heaven and earth and debunk the theory of evolution. One of my first bible studies with the young man was about a small worm. The memory is vivid and it’s such a precious biblical lesson that, I must share it with you.

Psalm 22:6 presents us with simple words with a hidden meaning: “I Am a Worm and no longer a Man.” To begin with, there is a worm, the Crimson or Scarlet worm. It’s story, it’s life, speaks volumes. Let me tell you about the scarlet worm. This worm climbs onto a tree all by itself.  By its own choiceit attaches and even ‘secures’ itself to the tree, knowing it will not come down off that tree alive. It goes to the tree to birth a family and to do that it must die in the process. Once on the tree the crimson worm attaches itself to the tree because the body of the worm will be the shelter for the young. during the birthing process, the worm secretes a gel or crimson colored fluid which covers the eggs that she lays (this leaves a stain on the tree so when you see such a stain, you will know, aSally Ettari a/k/a Sally Atari, Inspirational Music, Gospel, Christian, Concerts, Public Speaker, Bookings, Christian, OA, Guitar crimson worm was the cause.) At first glance, the reader of the Psalm might not think much about this sentence, “I AM A Worm”. In the story of Moses and the burning bush, when God calls Moses to go back to Egypt and speak to the pharaoh and tell him to “let my people Go”, Moses asks the voice coming from the fire, “Who shall I say sent me?” And God said, “Tell them, I AM”. And so, I Am is another name for God. I love this name because God is not “I was” or “The God, I will Be”, He is an ever-present God and TODAY we are called to seek HIM. (Exodus 3:14). Psalm 22:6 is the first verse in this psalm where King David (1000 years before Christ) describes the crucifixion of the Messiah. And the God, I Am goes on to liken Himself to A Worm, the scarlet worm. A few more things about “coccus ilicis”, yet another name for the scarSally Ettari a/k/a Sally Atari, Inspirational Music, Gospel, Christian, Concerts, Public Speaker, Bookings, Christian, OA, Guitarlet or crimson worm that you should know. The worm stays for three days, covering it’s eggs with its blood-like fluid. Then, the fluid is scraped from the tree and is used as a dye. This dye was used in the old testament times for the high priests garments and for the sanctuary linens. Additionally, the dead worm, when scraped off the tree (after the three days and in fact on the fourth day) it becomes the ingredient of medicines as it has healing powers. (“By His stripes we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5).

Are you Pickled?

Sally Ettari a/k/a Sally Atari, Inspirational Music, Gospel, Christian, Concerts, Public Speaker, Bookings, Christian, OA, Guitar“Once an alcohlic, always an alcoholic.” (Pg. 33T BB)

“Pickled!” Most people in program know and understand that once we are pickled, there is no turning back!

“Many do not comprehend that the alcoholic is a very sick person”. (AA Big Book xiii) This is also true for the compulsive overeater. We don’t get over  a real eating disorder; we don’t get cured, just recovered. It’s sort of like going into remission for the Cancer patient. We make a beginning when we stop the binge eating or other compulsive behaviors related to an eating disorder. We get recovered through the spiritual kit of tools called the “Twelve steps of recovery“. But many remain pickled for an extended period of time. In light of that, you may want to ask yourself the question, ‘What kind of pickle am I?’

In God’s Hands!

The True Meaning of a Sponsor!

For awhile now, I have been fascinated by the use of the expression, “In God’s Hands” in the A.A. Big Book. Four Sally Ettari a/k/a Sally Atari, Singer and Song Writer, Blog, Music, Guitar Twelve Step Recovery, Speaker, Concert Artist, sally.atari@yahoo.com, sallyatari.comtimes, in very significant ways, this expression is used:
Pg. 80, 100, 120 and 124.

  • ‘. . . he came to the conclusion that it was better to take those risks than to stand before his Creator guilty of such ruinous slander. He saw that he had to place the outcome in God’s hands or he would soon start drinking again, and all would be lost anyhow. He attended church for the first time in many years.’ (A.A. Big Book, Pg. 80)
  • ‘Both you and the new man must walk day by day in the path of spiritual progress. If you persist, remarkable things will happen. When we look back, we realize that the things which came to us when we put ourselves in God’s hands were better than anything we could have planned.’ (Ibid, Pg. 100)
  • If a repetition is to be prevented, place the problem, along with everything else, in God’s hands.’ (Ibid, Pg. 120)
  • ‘. . . Each member of it should be only too willing to bring former mistakes, no matter how grievous, out of their hiding places. Showing others who suffer how we were given help is the very thing which makes life seem so worth while to us now. Cling to the thought that in God’s hands, the dark past is the greatest possession you have, the key to life and happiness for others. With it you can avert death and misery for them. (Ibid, Pg. 124)

Recently, I heard someone put sponsorship in perspective! I have come to believe that the job of a sponsor is, first, to take our hand and walk with us, teaching us what they know and helping us to find a right relationship with God. Then, they help us put our hand into God’s hands and hold it there until we are unblocked and comfortable walking with our hand snuggly in God’s hands. After that, we are accountable to God and our sponsors are but a witness.
