When do our Children become ‘The Parents’?

Sally Ettari a/k/a Sally Atari, Singer and Song Writer, Blog, Music, Guitar Twelve Step RecoveryIt all started when I took my oldest daughter to the movies. I’m not sure what year that was, but she was a young adult. There was a scary scene in the movie and I was holding the car keys in my hands. When I’m really nervous, my leg starts to shake really fast and so the keys were apparently making some noise. Suddenly, she took the keys away from me! I looked at her, surprised. She said, ‘You’re making too much noise. I’ll give them back to you when the movie’s over.’

This was the first inkling that a shift was happening as this is what I would do when my children made too much noise!

Then, one day, my son asked me to come with him to buy a car. He was so excited to be buying a BMW M5! And I was happy for him. He was working hard as a merchant marine and electrical engineer for a large shipping company. Away at sea in Dubai and other far away places for months at a time, it was my joy to be asked to come and use my ‘car buying skills!’ My ego was sailing! Then, while he was talking to the dealer, and I was, interjecting here and there, trying to make myself useful, he turned to me. (The dealer had just walked away.) He said, ‘Mom, I can handle this. I just wanted your company. I can do this. If you can’t just listen, then maybe you should just go and wait in the car.” Unhappy with that conversation, I went to the car! Once again, I felt that some sort of role reversal was happening with my children and I didn’t know what to do about it!

Chicken in the News Again!

Sally Ettari a/k/a Sally Atari, Singer and Song Writer, Twelve Step RecoveryAre we going to talk about chickens again? Apparently, we must! As you may remember, I’ve been toying with giving up eating chicken for some time. In fact, I’ve made a few running starts with months of not eating any meat in the attempt to become a vegan, which I was for fourteen years beginning in my thirties and again, earlier this year for four months. I’ve talked about the chicken trucks in previous posts and most days, I don’t eat chicken.

What Can I do about the Animals?

Personality Plus Camel at the Bronx Zoo in New York

Not that long ago, my son asked me if I wanted to go to the Bronx Zoo with him. I love the zoo. In fact I used to think, where ever I travel to, it would be nice to visit the zoo in every major city that I visit. It would be like collecting spoons, or shells. I think I would like that. But recently, my youngest daughter, who is extremely sensitive, said, ‘No!’ to a trip to the zoo. She shared her new perspective about animal cruelty and that she could not participate in the way the animals are locked up in the Zoo.

A Lesson on the Leeches!

Sally Ettari a/k/a Sally Atari, Music, Guitar, Singer, Song Writer, Concert Artist, Public Speaker, Christian, God, OAWhen are there too many leeches in the water? For myself, one leech is too many leeches! Like most people, I’m not a big fan of anything large or small that bites. In fact, when thinking about ‘Noah’s Ark’, it seems to me, that would have been a good time to rethink ‘leeches’. But there I go, criticizing God yet again! The word ‘leech’ in Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary reports (in short), “it’s a carnivorous or bloodsucking usually freshwater worm with a sucker at each end; a hanger-on who seeks advantage or gain”. Wow, both ends of this ‘worm’ have a sucker so If you’re passing by and one end doesn’t get you, the other end has a second chance to grab you! Ok, I”ll get to the point, after all, is this much a do about leeches from last summer? No!
